Pondicherry, now officially known as Puducherry, is a beautiful coastal city in southern India, renowned for its French colonial charm, serene beaches, and unique cultural blend. As a Union Territory, it has a special administrative status in India and is well known for its distinctive character, shaped by both French and Indian influences.

Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram, is a historic coastal town in Tamil Nadu, India, famous for its ancient rock-cut temples, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and stunning beaches. Built primarily during the Pallava dynasty (7th-8th centuries), Mahabalipuram stands as a symbol of Tamil architecture and art, attracting history enthusiasts, pilgrims, and tourists from around the world.

Itinerary

Day 1 Chennai to Kanchipuram (1 hr 54 min (72.1 km))

Pickup from Chennai Airport or Railway Station and proceed to Kanchipuram (1.5 to 2 hours drive).

Start your temple tour at the Kamakshi Amman Temple, followed by the Ekambareswarar Temple. After lunch, visit the Varadharaja Perumal Temple and the Kailasanathar Temple.

In the evening, shop at Kanchipuram’s silk markets for authentic handwoven saris.

Overnight stay in Kanchipuram.

 

Day 2 Kanchipuram to Pondicherry

After breakfast, drive for about 2.5 to 3 hours to Pondicherry. Check in to your hotel and freshen up.

Start your sightseeing with a stroll through the charming French Quarter, exploring colorful colonial buildings and streets like Rue Dumas and Rue Romain Rolland.

After lunch, visit Aurobindo Ashram for meditation, followed by the nearby Manakula Vinayagar Temple, a famous Ganesha temple.

End your day with a relaxing walk along the beach promenade at sunset. 

 

Day 3 Pondicherry to Mahabalipuram

After breakfast, visit Auroville, about 30 minutes from Pondicherry, to enjoy its tranquil atmosphere. Then, drive 1.5 hours to Mahabalipuram.

Explore the Pancha Rathas, monolithic temples carved from a single rock, and see the Descent of the Ganges (Arjuna's Penance). After lunch, visit the UNESCO-listed Shore Temple for stunning views of the Bay of Bengal and take a photo with Krishna’s Butterball.

Finally, Check in to the hotel at Mahabalipuram

 

Day 4 Mahabalipuram to Chennai

Depart from Mahabalipuram, with a brief stop for any favorite spots or shopping before heading to Chennai.

 

Enjoy lunch along the East Coast Road (ECR), featuring fresh seafood and South Indian cuisine.

 

You will then be dropped off at Chennai Airport or the Railway Station, depending on your travel plans.
